Obstacle Sports are the largest and fastest growing mass participant sports world wide. These include Obstacle Course Racing, Functional Fitness (Fitness Festivals and CrossFit type competitions), Adventure Racing, Obstacle Competitions and Obstacle Racing (Ninja Warrior type events.) Modern competitions started in the 1980s and have seen explosive growth since 2006. Competitor numbers in 2015 exceed running (cross country, 5K, 10K, ½ marathon, marathon) and all triathlon type distances combined.

Obstacle Course Racing is also known as Obstacle Racing and in the United States as Mud Runs as well. Closely related sports include Military Pentathlon, Adventure Racing, Mountain Running, Steeple Chase, Cross Country Running, Fell Running, Obstacle Courses, Orienteering and the television shows American Ninja Warrior and Sasuke.

Obstacle racing and competitions embody fitness, health, camaraderie, play, friendship and mutual respect. In the words of David Breashears, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker:

For me, the Ancient Pentathletes [Spartans] used physical training and competition to build strong bonds among citizens in a healthy, prosperous and productive society. Enjoy the challenges, the fun, and the fruits of your labors. But most importantly, treasure the camaraderie and mutual respect brought forth by friendly competition, whether you finish first or last.
